“I want to thank Mid American for helping me become a better mother, wife, doctor, and person!”
As a physician, I have always studied the benefits of exercise and counseled my patients on the importance of regular exercise in the prevention and treatment of diseases. As a person, I needed a healthy way to cope with daily, life stress and develop more stamina to carry on with my everyday activities. And, although I’ve been active on and off throughout my life by playing sports, short-term gym memberships and exercising at home, I had not been as consistent. When I started at Mid American, my second baby was just a few weeks old and, as a second-time mother, when I looked in the mirror, I could hardly recognize myself. I had become the most out of shape and inactive I had ever been in my life! I knew that it was time to do something about it.
“I began taking group fitness classes and since then I’ve lost 30 pounds (which put me at my pre-pregnancy weight) and I lost another 10 pounds after that; I’ve also dropped 4 dress sizes.”
On top of it all, I feel much happier, have more energy and less stress. My confidence has increased and I have a more positive outlook on life.
The group fitness setting at Mid American is what helped me stay committed and motivated. It’s difficult to pick a favorite class because they I love them all! Through BODYPUMP I’ve seen a lot of positive changes in my body; Spin and the HIIT [high-intensity interval training] classes are great as well. And, as a Latina, I can transport my mind to my hometown, even if it’s just for an hour, during Zumba – it definitely helped me get through one of the worst winters in Michigan!
I am in the best shape I have ever been and so I need more direction to establish and reach new goals. That’s why I began incorporating personal training into my fitness regimen. After attending group fitness classes for a year I was able to lose the “baby weight” plus more than I originally intended, but as I reach my fitness goals I find myself in uncharted territory. Combining group classes with a personal trainer allows me to enjoy the best of both worlds: interacting with others and input from multiple fitness instructors in a group setting, and the one-on-one trainings that will help find and target my individual, weaker spots so I can develop further.
“In my life I’ve found that it’s more important than ever to exercise.”
When I started working out at Mid American I could not foresee how important fitness and becoming healthier was going to impact my life. As a result of my changes, my daughter has been asking to exercise and has been taking youth dance classes at Mid American. And, my husband has also started an exercise regime and eating healthier. I have several patients that have noticed a difference in me and have also started exercising. I cannot wait to see what the future brings!
As a mother, I always put my children first. As a wife I put my husband first. As a psychiatrist my patients always come first. While I am exercising I am putting myself first – it is what let’s me do all the other things effectively. I could find every excuse in the book to say I cannot do it. I choose not to let any sense of doubt stand in my way. It’s not about perfection, but consistency. It is about letting go of self-imposed limitations and doubts, and start believing that you are worth it. That you can do it. Your children, and yourself, deserve the best YOU!
